"The Government Dental College Alappuzha was founded in 2014 and is one of the colleges that are selected for dental education and health care in the state of kerala and in India.” This institution is located in Vandanam and it is the 4th government dental college in the state. Its location makes it the only institution in the public sector to render specialized dentistry to four important districts of Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam and Ernakulam. This geographical outreach gives a reason of its existence in the setting of the health sector in the area.

As a dental institution, it is still quite young but, in a very quick span of time, however, the college has become so popular for dental education and the provision of oral health care. It is a constituent College of Kerala University of Health Sciences and it provides a full time Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) course with an annual intake of 50 students. This measure has greatly enhanced the available options for dental education in the state thus increasing the recorded number of government BDS training places to 200.
